Blog Entry 38 of 38 "FountainTown" Life
Fountain, Colorado is a wonderful town. We've a lot of good people living here but as with most small towns there’s not much to do. Always in search of new and different forms of entertainment, I try to inform others of events and interesting places in and around Fountain. I also write about national issues, often to the frustration of my fiancée who sees things in a different light than I, because I believe these issues affect everyone from the largest city to the smallest town. I write them hoping to illicit responses, those in support of my position and those against it. Together, by considering all positions and opinions, we really can change the world, starting with own little town. Every idea, every plan, and every solution starts somewhere.

It's Time for a National DNA Database
Contributed by: Stephen Rosche   on 2/23/2008

A national DNA database accessible to law enforcement agencies would ensure that a vast majority of the most heinous crimes committed could be solved in a matter of days. The perpetrators could be positively identified leaving jurors will little doubt as to the guilt of those accused.

Imagine the number of missing children who would be identified with such a program in place. The bones long bleached white in the sun could finally be linked to someone and closure offered to those who've long suffered the loss of a loved one.

The program itself could be easily implemented, requiring as little effort as a drop of blood to renew a license or identity card. A Q-Tip swab at birth would accomplish much the same for those too young to possess such identification.

A tiny hair, a flake of skin, a drop of saliva, and presto, a proof-positive arrest. No more arrests of innocent parties, no more false alibis introduced to confuse the jury, an end to the often fallible witness identification process.

I'm a huge proponent of civil liberties and have often spoken out against intrusive laws which limit or outright remove those freedoms we've grown accustomed to but the importance of protecting our society from those most vile outweighs even my most libertarian opinions.

We need to put a stop to the victimization of society by these predators who carry on knowing that they most likely will never hear the gavel of justice. The rapist, the molesters, and the murderers need to be put on notice that we can and will find you and the price you'll pay will be steep indeed. Then, and only then, will we likely see a serious reduction in violent predatory crimes.

I know there's arguments out there against such a proposal. I'd like to hear them. I'd like to know what YOU think of such a program because you can bet your bottom dollar that someone somewhere is developing such.

I would agree to such in a heartbeat.

What do you think?

Instead of enforcing a "national" DNA database how about the citizens of each State require their governments to work together in a cooperative manner to facilitate this goal? I do not disagree with the desire for quick results. It is the driving force behind DNA data sharing and a worthwhile one. However, there are ways to achieve quick results for DNA queries without the States or the People providing the Federal Government one more thing to break trust with us over. It is a fool who continues to trust someone who has repeatedly and belligerently shown themselves to be unworthy of trust.
