Recycling?
Contributed by: Karen Bluemel on 7/6/2007

First off, I must confess ... I love the "Your Hub" section of the newspaper. For the past couple of years my husband and I have debated if we should continue to subscribe to the paper. Having a section which actually deals with news and events in our area has been wonderful.

O.K., now to my issue. Last month, my mom came out to visit from Portland, Oregon. I knew that once again, I would be counseled on better house keeping techniques, how to better raise my son and of course, the best way to brush our dog. With all of the unsolicited advice, the issue that really stuck with me was the lack of recycling we do.

When we moved here from the Pacific Northwestfour years ago, we hadbeen recycling for years. The program was very user friendly: newspaper in one bin, glass in another and lastly, plastic in the third. If things got mixed up in the process, guess what? They took it anyway.

After we got settled, I contacted the various garbage companies to ask about the various programs they offered. I went with one company based upon the fact they had a recycling program. What I discovered was, they only accepted certain items and the rest was left in the bins which then were dumped into the trash. Sort of counterproductive, don't you think?

Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to recycle without having to drive 30-miles round-trip? I definitely need help...my mom is coming back in October.

Waste Management used to have a good recycling program in the Tri-Lakes area. Two places to recycle newspapers, mags, junk mail, tin, and aluminum and one place to recycle cardboard. But the few have spoiled it for the many as some people decided to save a couple bucks on garbage pickup or a quick trip to the Monument dump and began putting garbage in the recycle bins. So, we are reduced to one recycle bin at King Soopers. Other than that, go down to Recycle America (i.e. Waste Management) by the old dog track in the Springs. They take just about everything. Yes, it's probably 30 miles round trip but all of us make enough trips down to the Springs on a weekly basis, and to those serious about recycling, a recycle trip can be added to any other trip to the Springs. Also, Tuscarora on Garden of the Gods takes "clean" styrofoam. These two locations are perhaps 2 miles from each other. As long as the few insist on spoiling things for the many, we have to make do with what's left.

I agree that Colorado residents seem very "laid back" about recycling. We moved from California 6 years ago, and I remember how proud I felt when I put all our papers, cans, plastic and GLASS in the proper bins. I guess I have inherited the "laid back" attitude here in Monument. I need some education on how I can become proud again. Anyone know?
