The local Soap Box Derby came to a successful conclusion last Sunday. Littleton resident Cody Hoeckelberg took the Championship in the Masters Division from a field of nine racers who came from as far away as Ogalalla, Neb. He will represent Colorado Springs at the All American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, July 21, racing against youths from more than 160 cities across the country. Cody out-distanced second-place finisher, Jaccob Watkins, of Larkspur to take the win.
The Super Stock Division Championship went to Jesse Brinkman of Colorado Springs. In a very close race, Jesse topped Kevin Alvarez, also from Colorado Springs, in a run off heat between first place of the Winner's Bracket and 1st place of the Loser's Bracket. The double elimination format allows each driver to get at least four runs down the hill before being eliminated.
Awards are given to place winners in each division plus a trophy for fastest heat and best appearance. The Champs, in addition to their trophies, receive an expense paid trip to Akron to allow then to compete in the All American race.
Many times , races are decided by differences of mere thousandths of a second. It requires a sophisticated timing system which the local derby is fortunate to have provided by the Sports Car Club of America. Other major sponsors are Pikes Peak Acura, Security Services FCU and LandCo. Inc. The City of Colorado Springs and Mayor Lionel Rivera are staunch supporters as well. The race is organized and supported by local Sertoma Clubs.
About four hundred people came out to enjoy the spectacle of the world's greatest youth racing event, "The Gravity Grand Prix". The local derby will run again in June 2008.
