Monument Cowboys football keeps pounding
Contributed by: Steve Cowdin on 10/15/2006

The Monument Cowboys have a heart and it is pounding this season. Three nights a week and every Saturday, 18 boys from the Monument area are outside working their cleats off.
Playing in the Lightweight Division of the Colorado Springs Parks and Recreation (CSPR) league, the Cowboys have been pounding the turf rather than watching TV or playing video games. The team is made up of fifth, sixth, andseventh graders from the northern extreme of Colorado Springs.
The team practices at Kings Deer Park and makes a 40 minute trip south on Saturdays to play games next to the Colorado Springs Airport.
Head coach and defensive coordinator Larry Commerford has implemented a rather sophisticated defensive playbook. Ten rookies on the team present challenges for this defense.
"There is much to learn in that first year for the rookies, but this group is taking it in quickly," states Commerford. "We can adjust and defend against most all of the offensive formations that our opponents throw at us."
Sixth-year players Luke Hiser and Steven Cowdin along with fifth-year starter Cameron Commerford hit hard and are anchors that are seldom fooled.
Veterans Michael Couture and Brenyn Humphrey handle the tackle positions and are backed up by safety Daniel Padrnos. Steven Murphy handles the end while Grady Blach watches the corners.
Offensive Coordinator Ted Gibson loves to use "the wedge" with Logan Jones and Nic Hansen splitting the quarterback duties. Slotbacks Adam Gibson and Jeremy Archuleta provide the speed and the moves with the ball. Fullback Michael Brown, along with ends Sean Grundman and Brian Johnson, round out the offensive attack.
Special teams are led by kicker Kyle Anderson and key blocking is provided by Jason Pope and Jesse Martin. Special teams coach Steve Cowdin points out: " We are one of the few CSPR teams to play two offensive squads and two defensive squads."
Ted Gibson said the team depth givesthe players"opportunities at multiple positions."
To reinforce their "Keep Pounding" theme, boys from offense, defense, and special teams are recognized for their contributions after each game.
"We look for someone who has gone above and beyond," Commerford said."The boys take a hammer home for the week and their name is added to the hammer."
Chants of "Keep pounding! Keep pounding!" can be heard throughout practices and games. Practices always end on a positive note as a player is selected to stand up and tell the team a joke.
