The Gazette Bad News Hounds

Sometimes there are moments that can define a bronze league softball season.
Thursday night, down by a run, with time expired, one out on the board and the bases loaded, the Gazette's Bad News Hounds were facing not only their fifth loss in a row, but a defeat at the hands of the 1-6 Namaste Sluggers.
"Not if I can help it," said Hounds hitter Mike Johnson, who proved who the real sluggers are by knocking the ball deep into center, driving in the winning runs. The final was 13-12.
The game began ominously, with thunder rumbling overhead and a light rain falling. The Hounds had easily defeated the Sluggers on opening day - Namaste is Sanskrit for "I bow to you." But the Sluggers seemed to have been practicing more than just their yoga, because they jumped out on top and stayed just ahead of the Hounds for much of the game. They benefited from some questionable calls, including a 3rd inning in which the umpires let them bat to four outs.
But the Hounds showed pluck and spirit, staying in pace on the scoreboard, and the Sluggers seemed perplexed as the game slipped away from them in the bottom of the 6th inning.
The win was meaningless. The Hounds improved to 3-5 on the year, have no chance of capturing the pennant, and next face Marigold Cafe at 6 p.m. Thursday.
But on this night, it meant everything.
