This year's Lewis-Palmer High School hockey team is eager to get back on the ice and improve on last year's inaugural season - a season that ended with a loss to eventual state champion Aspen in the quarterfinals of the state tournament.
This team has many returning starters, led by the all senior line of Keith Yates, Nick Galvin and Stevie Fillo. This line connected for two goals in a scrimmage against powerhouse Cheyenne Mountain on Nov. 23, and it appears hungry for more.
Coach Steve Fillo has high expectations for this group as well.
"This team is rich in talent-and we enjoy a pretty deep bench," Fillo said."We are expecting great things from thenine returning seniors on this team. They will largely determine how far we can go this year. I think we are strong at all the positions and I am looking forward to a fun, successful season."
Assistant coaches Dallas Strawn and Kevin Margarucci round out the returning coaching staff. Colin Anonsen and Bill Mack are the two senior goaltenders. Seniors Michael Fisk, Garrett Lukken and Derick Light, along with junior Joey Fillo anchor the defense. This season will also be a family affair, as there are four sets of brothers: The Fillos, Michael and Travis Fisk, Myles and Tyler Rigg, Travis and Kyle Lachner.
The season opener is this Friday, Nov 30, 6:30p.m., against Columbine at the Colorado Sports Center (Formerly Soc n Roll) rink. In a scheduling coup, The Rangers will play all their home games on Friday night, starting at 6:30. Upcoming home games: Pine Creek on Dec. 7and Ralston Valley, Dec. 14.
