The High School spring sports season has begun. Perhaps one of the most eager to get it underway was the Lewis-Palmer Boys Swim and Dive Team. Team members knew to the day when the season was to begin from about 8 weeks out. Lewis-Palmer started a boys' swimming and diving program just two years ago. Despite being the new kids on the block, they are to date undefeated in duel meet competition (16-0), including a victory over Douglas County on Friday, and last season they won the Metro League Championships by nearly 100 points over second place Coronado. Last year the Rangers graduated four seniors, three of whom had State qualification times or scores. That would hurt most teams, yet this year the Rangers, with 11 freshman on their 26-man roster, appear to be stronger than ever.
Last Friday, March 9, the Rangers took on Douglas County in a duel meet at Woodmoor Pines Country Club which the Rangers won handily, setting several new pool records and recording 5 (5A) State qualification times. The Rangers won every event. Junior Josh Day (50 & 100
freestyles) and Sophomore Heath Glover (200 & 500 freestyles) each won two events swimming State times. Juniors Erik Rodriquez (100
backstroke) and Matthew Grooms (100 Butterfly) also recored State times, and Freshman Logan Dean earned his first varsity win with a State time in the 200 IM. The Rangers also qualified all three relays for the 5A State meet.
The Rangers will travel to Arapahoe on Saturday to compete in a relay meet with several competitive teams from around the state. It will be a good indicator of the talent on this 2007 team. On Wednesday, March 21st at 4PM, they are back at Woodmoor hosting local rival Liberty.
