The holidays are past. Now's a great time to bundle up, get outside, and get some scenic exercise. And one of the best places to go--even in winter--is the Sante Fe Trail between Monument and Palmer Lake (featured on the front cover and on page 3 of the Thursday, January 3 edition of
Your Hub
).
This well-maintained (by the county) trail--accessible from either the east side of Palmer Lake or from just a couple hundred yards northwest of the Monument Safeway on Hwy 105--is a great place to walk your dog, ride your bike, or go for a scenic jog.
While attending a training conference for a couple of weeks this summer near the Inn at Palmer Lake, my wife and I availed ourselves of this great trail at least six or seven times. In addition to enjoying the fresh Colorado air, getting some good exercise, and reveling in the peaceful and scenic beauty of this area--with the only interruption being the occasional train rumbling by--we also got to do some great bird-watching, see several deer, and one night around dusk observe--and then be dive-bombed by--several large owls that were perched in the treetops.
What we discovered was that you definitely don't have to go into the mountains to enjoy all that Colorado has to offer. Much of it's splendor is right here near our own backyards!
