On Oct. 21, Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity held ground-breaking and house dedication ceremonies in the Stetson Hills neighborhood for two working, low-income families finding stability and hope in Colorado Springs. Saturn Corporation, Sunrise United Methodist Church and St. Francis of Assisi Parish joined with Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity to make the dream of homeownership a reality for these two families.
Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity (PPHFH) broke ground on a five-bedroom, two-bath home sponsored by Saturn Corporation for the Lowe Family. Carl and Cindy Lowe and their six children currently live in a three-bedroom mobile home. Turned down from traditional loans, the Lowes were thrilled to be selected for a Habitat home where they will have affordable mortgage payments, a no-interest loan and begin building equity on a home where their children will have room to grow and play.
Just a few houses away, Sunrise United Methodist Church and St. Francis Parish handed over the keys to new Habitat homeowner Jane Talbott and her two sons. The two churches have partnered to co-sponsor this home for the Talbott family. Sunrise UMC member and PPHFH board member Jeff Mawhirter said, "The overwhelming joy of working with St. Francis of Assisi in sponsoring a Habitat home is difficult to put into words. In addition to sharing the efforts of raising funds and providing volunteer labor, we've built some great friendships. When it comes to building a home for a deserving family, there are no theological differences."
PPHFH seeks to eliminate poverty housing in the Pikes Peak region by building simple, decent, affordable homes in partnership with the community and prospective homeowners. These homes will be sold to the families at no-profit and financed with a no-interest mortgage, creating affordable monthly payments.
