Pianist Michelle Sonoda Mutu is 7 years old. She started taking piano lessons from Jill Hortman in Colorado Springs in 2004 at age 4 andin September of this year changed to Lana Smith to learn by the Russian technique method. Michelleattends second grade at PalmerLakeElementary School and also attends the JapaneseSchool of Denver every Sunday. She plans to attend elementary school in Japan during summer vacation every year, as she did this last summer.

Soprano Gail Carpenter, long-time Front Range favorite graduated from the Indiana School of Music. She has sung with many top musicians such as Duke Ellington, and for President Ronald Reagan. Gail and her husband John Carpenter perform throughout Colorado and across the nation as "The Singing Sweethearts". Gail teaches voice, piano and drama in Woodland Park, Colorado Springs and Woodmoor.

Clarinetist Lee Barnes, born in San Francisco, is in high demand, and has had an extensive career as an orchestral and chamber musician. Lee's clarinet has found its way into virtually every style of music. He has served as Principal Clarinetist for 12 years with Pueblo Symphony Orchestra, Clarinetist with the Anchorage Symphony and Soloist for 15 years with USAF Academy Band. Lee Barnes' distinguished teachers include Fred Ormand, David Glazer, Philip Fath, Donald Carol, and Phil Aahorn.

Pianist Carl Eklund started taking piano lessons when he was 5 because in Iowa his birthday was too late by a week to go to kindergarten. It didn't take long to fall in love with playing piano and with the music of Beethoven, Mozart and Bach. In high school he studied with University of Cincinnati professor Mme. Olga Conus. He decided at the time to be a life-long serious amateur musician, and not ever be too busy to play the piano. He and his wife Jan give several recitals each year at their Colorado Springs home in which they play not only violin and piano duos, but also chamber music with many other fine musicians.

Violinist JanEklund started playing the violin at age 10. She studied with Ozzie Lehnert at CU Boulder. Jan has been playing violin-piano music with her husband,Carl for the last 37 years. She has played with the Pikes Peak Philharmonicfor 11 years, 7 of those years as concert mistress.Jan Eklund enjoys playing Celtic fiddle music, and won the fiddle contest at the Highland Games in EstesPark and at the Renaissance Festival. Jan must carefully plan her musical life, because she is also aregistered midwife, serving home birth couples in southern Colorado.

Poet/Writer Ruth Obee and her husband Kent are Colorado Springs locals, but have lived in South Asian and African countries for more than twenty years. Ruth Obee's book on a major African writer and thinker was published by Ohio University Press. Her stories and poems have appeared ina wide variety of local and nationaljournals and magazines. After returning to her Western American roots in Colorado Springs, she wrote a collection of poems titled "A Sense of Place: Discovering the Stratton Open Space," and was a regular contributor of feature stories and poetry to Kiva magazine, among other Colorado-based publications. She is currently working on abook about Red Rock Canyon Open Space. For more information, see www.ruthobee.com.

Poet Julianza Shavin-Katz, was poetry editor of her college magazine, attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, then received a scholarship from EmoryUniversity for outstanding contributions in writing and music, and holds Bachelor's degrees inPhilosophy and English. She is a journalist and certified full-time proofreader, editor, and is currently freelance-writing nationwide. Julianza Shavin-Katz was a finalist in the 2006 Pikes Peak Poet of the Year Contest, and reads at ThinAirPoetry Slam, alocal performance group.

Multitalented, Ms. Shavin-Katz has performed her original music in venues both large and small. She playsall genres, in places as varied as the FineArtsCenter, upscale restaurants, casinos, and weddings. She has studied with composer Leonard Rhodes and with singer John Carpenter.

Within the last few years Julianza Shavin-Katz has developed an intense interest in abstract visual art, and participates in art shows regularly. Her husband Harold is a guitarist, poet, and computer engineer, and they have three children.

Poet Yousuf Zaigham was born in Lucknow, India. He holds two Masters, one in Philosophy & one in Political Science from University of Wisconsin, Madison. He came to U.S in the turbulent & smoldering 1970's after realizing that the religious persecution of the cultural "apostates" is imminent in Pakistan. He was already a published poet & fiction writer in Pakistan before he landed in Madison. As most Asian immigrants he had to start out from bottom up. He plunged himself into the immigrant shuffle & would stay in the arena of computers till he retired. He has been writing in English for the last fifteen years.

After his retirement he has been pouring himself feverishly into poetry's carafe & his first book Like A Vermeer & Other Poems which had 165 poemscame out last year & was enthusiastically received by Gazette & the poetic community in Denver & Colorado Springs. His poetry deals with the world with all its promised & denied & derailed raptures, its terminal silliness & its slimy wickedness. God, Christ, Frost, Nature, Marx, Freud, Wagner, Jessica Alba & Carmen all make their cameo appearances but English language remains his most riveting & demanding mistress in his re-imagined universe.

He is currently working on his forthcoming & monumental poetic volume, which he suspects, will be entitled Poems For My Odalisque. He occasionally gives seminars on poetry related topics.

Pianist/Concert Organizer Abram Minzer is the creator/director of a diverse Colorado Springs-based music salon series.
