The Monument Branch Library and Children's Specialist Julie Simmons have formed a new book club for second to fifth graders.
Several new films based on children's books will be released in the next few months. The Read it B4 You See it Book Club encourages youngsters to read the book before they view the film. Ms. Simmons also said the library wishes to involve children of this age group in library activities in preparation for the summer reading programs.
The first movie, to debut on February 14, is based on the
Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. The Chronicles are a five-volume fantasy series involving children and such creatures as trolls, griffins and elves.
Twelve readers (ten of them boys) gathered at the library on January 30 to discuss the books while munching popcorn. They talked about their favorite volume and favorite character and why it was significant that kids played such a major role in the plot. They also played a game based on the books. Finally, a drawing was held for a free pass to see the movie.
The next book to be featured is
Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Seuss. The discussionabout Horton will take place on February 28 at 4 p.m. Those planning to attend should register at the library.
There will be no meeting in March due to Spring Break at the Your Library activities.
In April the group will discuss Prince Caspian, a new film based on the Chronicles of Narnia by C
.S. Lewis.
