McKenzie Brummond, 12, Lewis-Palmer Middle School student, won first place in the Betty Field Memorial Youth Writing Contest, sixth-grade category, with her short story, "Organ on Tejon Street".
McKenzie specializes in writing historical fiction, and this short story is no exception. "Organ on Tejon Street" is about two young boys who, while visiting their grandmother, stumble upon an old church organ in her attic. One of the brothers starts playing with the keys and they are magically transported to another time and place.
It is unclear where they are until they read a sign that states, "Welcome to the Grand Opening of Tom's Drugs, December 12, 1887. McKenzie uses beautiful descriptions and realistic language to make the reader believe the boys are truly a part of downtown Colorado Springs in 1887. McKenzie is a gifted writer with a great sense of style. The students are certain they will one day see her name on a bestseller.
Andrea Spencer, 11, Lewis-Palmer Middle School, won third place in the contest, sixth-grade category, for her short story, "The Friend's Secret".
Andrea is another talented writer who also would like to some day be an author. Andrea's short story is more of a romance about two girls falling for the same boy. The nice thing about Andrea's story is that the end explains how important trust is between two friends. "That's not what I'm most upset about, Jamie. It's the part where you lied to me. How can I trust you again?"
Andrea is a very descriptive writer and it is always enjoyable to read her work.
