The setting is 2076 on Mars, and Horseman middle school seventh grader, Brighid Baily is the data officer for the simulated mission at the Challenger Learning Center. "I get to send all the information I get to the navigation, life support, medical and communication teams. I feel like I am doing what actual people get to do," Baily said.
The center is a non-profit organization and purpose is to get middle school age kids, excited about careers in science and math. Dr. Gary Colter, the chenters chairman of the board, and retired retired NASA and Air Force Academy professor say the need for a learning center. "We want to be a community resource to get students into the science and math workforce pipeline," Challenger director of Marketing, Debbie Hertzop said. "This is key, because we tend to lose females and minorities to those careers. It is definitly changing, and we hope the center has had some input in that."
Maddie Bottini,a member of the Mars medical crew in mission control said,"We are in charge of testing the crew's bodies on how they adapt in space. In science we learn about the human body, and now I am actually using that. We use math to calculate where we are going."
Through the 'airlock' unit,(so you don't get "sucked out into space") the crew up in space, wearing white shiney spacesuits
The center works with over 53 districts throughout Colorado, which sounds like a lot, but it equals only, "Twenty per cent of the students that we impact," Hertxop said. "We would like to have four additional centers"
