My wife convinced me I should participate in the annual St. Baldricks fund raiser this year.
Prior to last Friday's event I sent an email to friends and family to solicit donations. One of the donations I received challenged my son Kiel with a $100 donation to St. Baldricks if he shaved his head. I sat down with Kiel (13) to explain the challenge. He knew I was shaving my head, but I wanted to make sure he knew what this fundraiser was about so he could decide if he wanted to participate. I was very proud of him when he told me he wanted to shave his head. That night we went to football practice and told his teammates what we were doing and we would welcome any of them to come with us on Friday after school to watch us get shaved.
The next night Kiel came home and 5 of his friends had decided they would like to raise some money and shave their heads.
Last Friday was quite the experience watching these six young men sitting in the barber chairs getting their hair buzzed off. On the way home I listened to these guys in the car and it was so rewarding to hear them talking how they just possibly raised enough money to save some kids life in the future.
My hair is off to all of the other participants, especially the women that were giving up 10 or more inches of hair to Locks of Love. It left quite the impression when I walked in and saw a grandmother getting a razor taken to her head after getting shaved, a whole bald family getting their picture taken, and men with long hair and beards getting everything shaved off.
I am impressed with each and every one of them and truly believe one individual can make a difference.
