Today's Healthy Hint of the Week is easy and free. Just breathe deep. Deep breathing increases the oxygen to your internal organs, which keeps them working at their best. We all know it helps us relax and reduce stress, but experts believe it also helps us lose weight, ease PMS and menopause symptoms and increase athletic performance. When I am having trouble falling asleep, if I take three very deep breaths, I usually go to sleep shortly thereafter.
As spring approaches and the weather warms up,you mightopen yourcar windows at stop lights (so your deep breaths are drawing "clean" air) and take three deep breaths. First breathe out as you count to five or ten, push out all the air you can, then breathe in slowly through your nose to the count of five or ten. Repeat thisthree or more times, you will be helpingyour lymph system get rid of body waste, increasing the capacity of your internal organs and boosting your immune system. I have found that if I start to feel a cold come on and Ibreathe deep many times during the day, that expected cold doesn't show up.
Dr. Gail Warner advises her patients to go a step further to increasing lung capacity by: standing withyour back against a wall, push your heels, rear, shoulders, head and arms against the wall if you can. Now try to push your lower back flat against the wall and maintain that position for one minute. It opens up your lungs, may increase your athletic performance and will help prevent the hunched-over-old-lady-look we all dread as we age.
So, relax and breathe deep this week! You are going to love it!
