Forest Ridge Community ChurchMissions Trip to Lake Charles, LA:
Dick Cosgrove, Tom Vierzba, Kathy Cleary, Lynda Ochs (a friend from New Jersey), Leslie Brewer, Caitlin Campbell, Ron Robins, Phil Tweedey, Irene Babcock, Zack Weingartner
Day 1 (Sunday, February 18)
Most of the group rendezvoused in Houston and from there we drove to Moss Bluff, LA, outside Lake Charles. Our accommodations are at the Southwest Louisiana Volunteer Housing center, operated by the United Way and Partners in Prayer.
Accommodations here are fairly Spartan, bunk beds with thin mattresses, outside showers that take a short walk; and only one inside bathroom. But against the backdrop of hardship that the locals have endured in the wake of Hurricane Rita, it seems a small sacrifice.
We have groups here from all over the country. Many are church groups that are here to improve their heart for service. There is also a large contingent of college kids here from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada.
The ages range from people a youthful 75 to an eager 18.The atmosphere here is strangely peaceful.Everyone here is here to help; it shows on everyone's face. The camaraderie is special, as there is only one agenda.
Because the number of groups (8) at the center this week is unusually large, Jennifer and Emily will be cooking dinner every night.Huge thanks and gratitude for the wonderful hospitality.
This week in Louisiana is Mardi Gras celebration, and locals have encouraged us to revel in their traditions, so we ventured downtown to see the Boat Parade, Zytogote and Steamboat Bill's (Lake Charles #1 voted seafood Cajun restaurant).
