Blog Entry 8 of 14 Sample this and that
Welcome to Sample's blog. I am a mom of three young girls and live in a great neighborhood and community. A very small town with a huge heart. I struggle with a theme for my blog, so I will just tell you that it is about everyday life as a mom, wife, friend, community journalist and sports enthusiast. I truly believe everyone is interesting and has a story to tell. I hope to share some interesting, funny, insightful and informative blogs that you can relate to as a parent, friend, neighbor, YMCA sports fan, working mom, dad, at home or outside the home, everyday joe about everyday life.

Fishing brings reality to food chain
Contributed by: Michele Sample   on 7/2/2007

I spent the weekend camping with my three daughters, three girlfriends and their children. We had 10 kids, ranging in age from 6 to 18.

The weather was perfect, sunny and in the 80's. Colorado Campground is about 7 miles from Woodland Park, and is ideal for riding bikes, fishing, squirt gun fights, cooking s'mores and telling ghost stories around the campfire. We did them all.

On Saturday, we hiked or road bikes to Manitou Lake, loaded with sunscreen, bug spray, snacks and water. The challenging part was sharing 6 fishing poles between 10 kids. My middle daughter who is 8-years-old was sitting on the edge of the lake, pole in hands, red cheeked, swatting flies.

"Mom, I'm never going to catch a fish," she said. I tried to reassure her that you need patience to fish. Wouldn't you know it, a few minutes later she screamed, "I got a bite!" Everybody ran over to witness this honorable feat. When she saw the blood from the hook, she grimaced and looked like she was going to cry. We went ahead and strung the fish, hoping we would catch more to cook.

My youngest daughter caught another brookie trout, so at the end of the day we had two. Even though the fish were kept in the water, they died. This broke my daughter's heart. All the adults tried to offer their words of wisdom to help her understand.

We threw the fish in the lake and while we were packing up, an Osprey swooped down, and snatched up the dead fish. The food chain in action. We couldn't have planned our life lesson any better. Share your camping stories. Call 636-0296 or e-mail me at Michele.sample@coloradosprings.com.
