Healthy Hint of the Week - Aluminum
Contributed by: Kathy Loidolt   on 2/29/2008

Aluminum occurs in nature and has many beneficial uses, but it can build up to toxic levels in our body and has been attributed to nervousness, headaches, decreased liver and kidney function, seizures, softening of bones, memory loss, Alzheimer's disease and other ailments.Autopsies of people who died from Alzheimer's disease showed accumulations of up to 4 times the normal amount of aluminum in their brain cells, especially in the area responsible for memory. Aluminum was found to increase estrogen-related gene expression in human breast cells grown in labs.

Check the labels of the food and personal products you buy. You will find aluminum in the following types of products: antacids, baking powder, tortillas, buffered aspirin, anti-inflammatories, grated and processed cheeses, table salt, infant formula, cake and cookie mixes, bleached flour, tooth paste and shampoo. Non-stick cookware, dental amalgams and, I am sorry to tell you, beer and soda in aluminum cans, are more sources of aluminum that can be absorbed into our bodies.

We are wise to read the ingredients in the products we buy and choose alternatives such as: organic baking powder, tortillas, flour, cheese, infant formula, sea salt, natural deodorants, shampoos and toothpastes, glass or stainless pots and pans, and glass bottled drinks. I, for one , want to remember things in my old age!
