Healthy Hint of the Week - Water
Contributed by: Kathy Loidolt   on 2/14/2008

In the dry months of a Colorado winter, we know that we need water, but did you know that the amount of water, the temperature, time and kind of water you drink may affect your health?

As we have been told in school, our bodies are made up of 60-70% water. Yet chiropractor Dr. Gail Warner tells us that most of the people she sees on a daily basis are dehydrated to some level. One hundred percent of the children she sees who have ADD or ADHD (Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Hyperactivity Deficit Disorder) are dehydrated. We need water to keep our bodies in top shape. A good rule of thumb for water intake is: divide your body weight in half and drink that amount in ounces every day. Therefore, if you weigh 150 lbs, you need 75 ozs of water every day, or almost 5 of the 16 oz bottles. If you are working out, you need even more.

It is best to drink your water 20 minutes before or after eating. This allows your digestive enzymes to do their job of processing your food. Drinking water while you eat dilutes the enzymes needed to digest the meal. Working this drinking system into your day is not as difficult as it sounds, it just takes a bit of planning until you get a routine. Drinking a large glass of water as soon as you wake up is a great way to get your body going in the morning and gets about one fifth of your drinking out of the way. I try to drink a full glass of water every time I come into the house and again before I leave.

Room temperature water is easier for your body to process than cold water.
Filtered water is better than city or tap water, which contain chlorine, flouride and many other poisons. Some people prefer RO (Reverse Osmosis) water. It is probably the purest water you can get a hold of, but the flitering is done so well that some experts are concerned it may be missing minerals we need. Dasani and Aqua Fina are bottled RO waters.

Grab a water and drink up! We need it!
