Last month, Men's Fitness magazine ranked Colorado Springs the "fittest city in the nation". Monument resident, Clay McGann was probably a huge part of the calculation when they ranked the cities. On February 8th, Clay and two other local men from Colorado Springs took to the ice. Ice climbing, that is.
One of the climbers was Joe Groshong, who owns and operates the RockClimbingCenter in Monument. Both Clay and Joe get lots of practice at the indoor climbing center with and without ice.
Located in the Uncompahgre Gorge in Ouray, Colorado, the Ouray Ice Park was opened in 1995 as the world's first park devoted exclusively to the sport of ice climbing.
Over the past 14 years the park has grown to become the largest ice climbing park in the world. Thanks to several large donations from local private donors, the park now has reliable plumbing, a welcome center, over 200 routes and employs 5 part-time local persons.
