Just a few months after Ben Valdez began his tenure as director of the Widefield Community Center in July of 2005, he found himself brainstorming with other faculty members about possible program ideas. "We have this beautiful tree right outside the facility," he said. "I thought it would be a great idea to have a holiday celebration for the entire community."
So Valdez made a few phone calls that resulted in Target and Wal-Mart donating nearly twenty thousand lights to trim the tree. The lights are already strung up, but they won't be lit until the First Annual Tree Lighting Celebration takes place on Tuesday, December 5 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
The lights won't be the only decorations on display. Local elementary schools are making ornaments and Widefield Junior High School students are creating luminaries to light up the sidewalk around the center. The Widefield High School Choir will perform at the event, as will the Mesa Ridge High School Band.
There will be booths featuring local crafters, hayrides, caroling, and a chance for youngsters to get their photo taken with Santa Claus as well.
Anyone who brings a canned good will receive a free cup of Wendy's chili, cookies, and a hot drink.
The festivities will conclude with the tree lighting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday evening. After the Celebration, the tree lights will be on a timer, illuminating the twenty thousand lights each night from 5 - 9:30 p.m.
"We want it to be an annual event, so we hope to get the community involved, participating in different activities that we offer," Valdez said.
The Widefield Community Center is located at 705 Aspen Drive. Call the center at 391-3515 for more information.
