COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- No one can tell women working out at four Colorado Springs
Curves fitness facilities that you can't slim down while enjoying milkshakes.
They learned otherwise during "Milkshake Days" in late February.
The women interrupted their 30-minute routines for milkshake breaks, kicking off a month-long "
Curves are Back in Style" celebration.
The lowfat Chocolate-Banana and Vanilla-Strawberry milkshakes were whipped up by Milkshake Days sponsors Erin Johnson of Western Dairy Association and Linda Shields of Sinton Dairy. The thick shakes were made with
Curves' protein powder, milk and fresh fruit.
Johnson, Retail Channel Account Manager for Western Dairy Association, said they hope to raise women's awareness of the importance of consuming adequate amounts of dairy foods every day. She explained that 95 percent of women over the age of 50 fail to get their daily calcium recommendations, and that one in two of those women eventually will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture.
"Three servings of lowfat milk, cheese or yogurt daily help women to get enough calcium, and milk's many nutrients work together to help protect bones," Johnson added.
Throughout March,
Curves posted tips about calcium-rich dairy foods, revealing recently-discovered health benefits ranging from lowering blood pressure to reducing risk of cancer, strokes and kidney stones. Dairy foods also help promote a healthy weight when part of a nutrient-rich, balanced diet.
Everyone who worked out at the selected
Curves in March were entered to win dairy gift baskets, compliments of the sponsors, and
Curves offered discounts on its protein powders.
The
Curves locations participating in the event are at 2360-F Montebello Square Drive; 2106 Templeton Gap Road; 7689 N. Union Blvd.; and 725 Garden of the Gods Road.
