The Widefield High School Building Trades program recently finished building its annual student-built house at 8389 Freestar Way in Widefield. On Friday, May 11, the class presented the house keys to the District 3 Board of Education.
For over 25 years, Widefield High School has provided project-based vocational education through its Building Trades program. The annual student-built house project was started in 1980 by instructor Lynn Kopasz. He ran the program until four years ago when Dan Vogel took over as the Building Trades instructor for the school.
Vogel presented the keys to Martin Kuhn, District 3 Board President, in a short ceremony on Friday celebrating the 26 th house completed by the Building Trades program.
"This is a program that embodies the American Dream," Kuhn said. "Kids from this program will go on to get jobs and build their own houses."
The house will be sold through New Generation Homes and proceeds will go toward helping students in next year's Building Trades program build house number 27.
"It's run the smoothest of any house we've ever done because of the kids," Vogel said. "There's just not been any issues."
