Mitchell Gifford, 10, who attends Patrick Henry Elementary School, recently won the Colorado State Championship (SRAC D-25 district) in Supercross and Motocross. For those who are unfamiliar with these events, Supercross is held inside with different-sized motorcycles that jump over hills, turn sharp corners and fly through the air, and the Motocross is held outside with a much longer track, longer jumps and all around tougher track, mud, hills, rocks, etc. The size of the motorcycle normally depends on the age of the rider. In Mitchell's case, he rides a 65CC KTM and an 85CC Honda.
Mitchell started riding when he was just 5 years old on a 50CC Honda motorcycle in the local area. The two tracks (motocross) that we have are the Aztex and Wildrat, which are located about 8 miles east on 94. The Supercross is normally held at the Penrose stadium. These races that Mitchell rides in are as far south as Pueblo, northeast to Sterling, west to Grand Junction and north to Milliken. He also competes in RMXA D-25.
In Mitchell's age group, out of 20 Motocross races, he won all but one. The state championship is derived from the total number of points accumulated during the year. Mitchell not only won his age group in the Supercross, but also in the higher age group, 7 to 11, on his 65CC KTM motorcycle. Just this past weekend, Mitchell clinched the state championship in his age group in the Motocross racing on his 65CC KTM. This was held at Lakewood, and was attended by more than 2,000 spectators and 732 racers. Would you believe that no news/sports writers from The Gazette were present, nor have they ever been at any of the local Motocross races to report the results?
For some reason, maybe because of no publicity, local people are not aware of this sport. It is a thrill to watch. Maybe this paper will help.
