As a young girl growing up in Dublin, Ireland, I was always fascinated listening to people speak a different/foreign language. It created such a desire to learn another tongue that as soon as high school was over (college wasn't even in the picture!), my decision was made; the world would be my oyster! In later years, after living in places like London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, New York, etc...my father would often tell me
"A rolling stone gathers no moss!"
to which my response would be "W
ho wants to gather moss!!" I al
ways had an answer to anyone who wanted to interfere with my dream of seeing the world!
The first year away (Milan, Italy) was the hardest one, so imagine my surprise at just 19 years of age...being able to understand a whole mafia-related movie one night after coming home (a brief stay..had to get back out there again!) and translating parts for my dad. What an incredible rush to be able to understand/communicate with folks from other faraway lands! After learning to speak six languages altogether, I can honestly say that it is well worth the effort in learning. Most of the time, we tend to study in the comforts of our own backyard, but please try (the best time is in your youth, of course!) to experience the culture of being in a new country and I promise you,
a whole new world
will open its doors to you, as long as you are willing to take the risk!!!
Best of luck and most of all, have lots of fun while learning!!
