Let's Volunteer - Starlight Starbright
Contributed by: Bill Stanley on 7/22/2008

Nothing will tug at your heart more than a chronically ill child. A chronic illness is one that persists for a long time. It is hard on the little victim and equally difficult for parents and siblings. The nonprofit Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation helps families pull together away from the hospital setting through entertainment, education, and family outings. Meeting other families with similar challenges makes everyone stronger.

On Sunday July 20, the Colorado Springs chapter of Starlight Starbright held a Great Escape at the M Lazy C Ranch near Lake George, Colorado. It was "Cowboy Day" according to Robin Yamiolkoski, Great Escapes Coordinator for Southern Colorado. "We sponsored horseback riding and hay wagon rides. There were games, a BBQ, and two Western singers, Festus and Earl. All the kids and their parents had a fabulous time." Robin organizes two Great Escapes a month, the most of any chapter this size in the country. "We serve 100 families and hope to double that by April 2009."Families learn of Starlight Starbright at hospitals and doctors' offices as well as word of mouth.

It was on purpose that the sick kids had the same name tags as their brothers and sisters. It was a time to have fun, not fret about various sicknesses. Volunteers and ranch hands had just as much fun. Sue Karashinski, the Great Escape coordinator from Denver, said, "We need more volunteers to help with games and crafts, assist with event coordination, raise funds, and deliver toys to hospitals."

Want to volunteer? Visit starlight-colorado.org. Can't volunteer, then send money! The Southern Colorado office after two years has come of age and must raise money locally for future events. The next fundraiser is Saturday, July 26 from 3-7PM at Cowboys. The cost is $25, and you will be able to bid on horseshoes decorated at the ranch by the kids themselves.

Was this Great Escape a success? Just look at the faces - Evan on a horse, Emily decorating her horseshoe; and Chris with his plate of food.

Thanks for the educational story Bill. It's nice to hear about The Great Escape for the kids. It is heart wrenching to see them in pain, but such a joy to see them smile. And thanks for letting us know about volunteer opportunities at starlight-colorado.org!
