Reflections From the Second Half
Musings of one with half a century (or more) gone. What is really important. What should have been done. What should have been said. Who is saying it.

Okay. So I had to sit in "8B" today. Yeah, the middle seat. My scheduled flight out of Denver was delayed so I hopped on an earlier flight. Sounded like a good plan when I thought of it. So...what is it with people in the window seat and the aisle seat that make them think that just because they have the better seats they need to take all the arm rests as well. You've been there (probably with me sitting on the aisle and taking your arm rest) and felt yourself becoming narrower and narrower as your row partners stretch out and get comfy. All in all it was bearable since I was only going to Dallas - an hour and a half flight.
Okay, so the guy next to me, a business type with way too much to do...in that short flight he texted for a while - more on that - read a little, worked on his computer until his battery ran out (he put in spare but that one wasn't charged I guess so he gave up), pulled out his book again....then slept for a couple minutes. Just felt like embarrassing myself to suggest he take a break!!
So, if the airlines really want people to believe that using your cell phone when the aircraft door is closed is dangerous, then they need to enforce it a little better. This guy was on his PDA, texting away, until we were cleared for take off. Two flight attendents walked right by us doing their "safety checks" and looked right at him but said nothing. So...is it dangerous or not? I know...junk stress...but, come on!!
Now, I know airlines are in a tough spot. They need the business and if they jump all over people for doing what they are not supposed to (and I assume this guy was a frequent flyer and knew the drill because he totally shined on the safety talk. Remember...he was busy texting) they will lose their business and be in a worse spot than they are already. So, I understand...but if it really is dangerous - be consistent and keep us all safe. If it isn't, let us get on with staying in touch with our community every second of every day....okay, maybe it's not such a bad thing......
Well, I made it to Dallas okay - and hopefully will be in my usual aisle seat on the way home.....alone!
