Blog Entry 32 of 76 Awake Thou That Sleepest, Arise From Your Slumber
I am a seeker of truths. I am a soul who has been "awakened" and now an awakener of other souls. Two years ago, something happened to me that I can only explain as a kind of "awakening" from a haze that was my everyday life. The embers of "who I was was" that stirred deep within me were set aflame when I went to see a movie. I wasn't expecting this experience, which is why in part I think it happened. I left the theatre crying and with the most throbbing headache I've ever had, but not the average kind of headache crying gives you. This was the kind of headache characters in movies have after waking up from a coma. The world seemed new to me and it was as if I was remembering my life and who I was for the very first time. Since then, my life has changed in so many ways. And now it has led me here, to this new forum of shared thoughts and ideas. Like the first time I posted my "awakening" experience on a public website, I am again feeling this fear of "Is this really the right place for me to post this?" But like two years ago, I'm willing to take this risk again because I know how important it is to share my experience with as many people as I can, with the hope that others who have had a similar experience, or at least the desire to understand more about what this is about might have the courage to come together and find one another through this blog. It is my hope and belief that I will read the stories of others who are also "seekers" here. Welcome.

Does Earth Have A Soul?
Contributed by: Dianne Perea   on 9/24/2007

I watched a program called "How the Earth Was Made", a two-hour long show that did an excellent job of explaining the age of the Earth and how we are now able to tell the story about what happened to our planet over the past 4.5 billion years. Simply stated, the Earth has gone from a hot ball of fire that was relentlessly bombarded by space meteors, to a water world, then to a ball of ice, then to a lush greenhouse, then back to ice, until finally the world that it is today.

The Earth has undergone cataclysmic changes for BILLIONS of years in order to create the perfect environmental conditions today that make it possible for us to be here. Now, If the Earth were a person, it would be around 65-70 years old, which means in about two billion more years, the Earth will be a dead planet, a planet very much resembling Mars. In two billion years, scientists predict all of Earth's resources will be gone and this lush, beautiful, blue planet, a planet teeming with life, bursting with vibrancy and color, will be a lifeless and colorless ball in space.

At the end of the show, I sat there with my eyes transfixed on the screen, hearing those four lonely words hanging in the air: "The Earth will die...the Earth will die...the Earth will die." A haunting sadness washed over me and, for the very first time, I felt a deep and powerful empathetic connection to the Earth. I could feel the essence of Earth, her uniquely characteristic qualities amongst her planetary peers. Her beauty cannot be ignored nor denied, so much that even Saturn's magnificent rings are not enough to stop its jealous desires for Earth's life-giving powers.

There is only one thing harder to ponder than our own mortality and that is the reason for our existence. Humans talk to each other about living in the moment and embracing every single day of our lives. We believe that humans have eternal souls, and that our souls never die, so death is not something we fear, a fact in which we all take great comfort. But what about our planet?

Does our planet Earth, the planet that hosts each and every one of our fragile and miraculous lives, have a soul or consciousness?

A self-admitted tree hugger, there's no two ways around saying I cannot imagine our planet dead. Earth has been the life source for billions upon trillions of living organisms for billions of years. We talk about the Earth being our "Mother", for Earth is the original and ultimate life-giver, pouring out life and never asking for anything in return. So who or what will be around when Earth is no longer the magical and mystical blue-green planet in our solar system? To us, two billion years seems like an eternity, but in reality, these are the last two chapters of Earth's life. If humans are still around in two billion years, perhaps we will have discovered an Earth-like planet (Venus, maybe) that is ready for us to inhabit. Hard to say. For now, I'd like to think we could simply remember how lucky we are to be here, and be grateful for every beautiful image, sound, smell and emotion we get to experience every day on this generous planet.

Please be good to the Earth. Think of the Earth in a way that goes far beyond recycling, global warming or your carbon footprint. Try to embrace Earth as a living entity which has the best story every told to tell, but depending on what the future holds, a story that could be lost forever. Say a special pray for Earth, for she does live. Besides, how much can it hurt to add one more prayer at the end of your day?
