Blog Entry 4 of 37 Kickin' it with Kecia
Growing up in a small town of maybe 1,200 people in Kansas, I knew everyone else's business (and unfortunately everybody knew mine). Since then, I've been eager to learn the latest scoop. I love community/neighborhood news, and I'm hoping others out there will reaffirm my observations or inform me of happenings in Powers, Eastern Plains and Falcon hubs!

Connections
Contributed by: Kecia   on 10/18/2006

Making connections makes me happy.

I love introducing friends to others and watching them connect. My best friend, who is quite accustomed to listening to me ramble on and on from one random thought to the next, said he was surprised that I didn't speak up much when we went out with a larger group one night. I just like to watch others get along, which is why I've tried and failed horribly several times to make love matches - someday, though, it's going to work, and I'm going to consider it my most excellent accomplishment.

Making connections was my favorite and most rewarding part of The Slice. After I wrote a story about Steve, a man with spina bifida who uses medical marijuana to lessen his pain, a woman in the community called his caretaker to see how she could help.

Another woman took time to call about how she just had been thinking about getting back into roller skating when we ran a feature about Skate City, detailing a special time for senior skaters.

And one Rustic Hills resident wanted to know how to get a hold of Jerome Nixon, who also lives along Constitution Avenue, so that they could join forces to combat a raised speed limit or any other unwanted mandate for Constitution.

As much fun as it was for me to make connections and connect others through The Slice (and believe me, I know I'm cheesy - been told that all my life), I hope YourHub, with your help, will connect more people and make my life a little more full, too.

Connections are more important than ever in this high-tech world, where people seem to become more robotic than humans...self-checkout aisles, automated self-services for products, etc. Even the social networking sites can get very unsociable when the friendship gets one-sided and only one person seems to do the talking...the opposite of its purpose (what an irony). So get connected....via going out with friends, meeting new people at events, and of course interacting via YourHub!

MAINTAINING connections is equally important. I really cherish getting together with my best friends twice a month (more if we can manage it), and I love what YourHub is doing to build community. I am really looking forward to meeting new people and sharing stories with them. Thanks for all you do, Kecia!

Yes, connections rock. http://www.linkedin.com may help people organize their connections and make new connections. The real key is to upload your address book and see who is using LinkedIn already. I discovered about 50 to 60 people I know are already using it. That's out of about 300 people I know. Looking at the anti-spam policy, they look safe. Don't take my word for it, peak at it yourself. :)

I appreciate your passion for connections! Since moving here from Boston and b/4 that Bozeman Montana, I miss "community". In Montana I enjoyed the knowing people feel, and in Boston I found that the old European since of community was still alive and flourishing. I moved to CO because I love the Mtns, the weather, and the laid back rock-mtn attitude. BUT, I certainly miss community and culture... especially out here in "Powers" land!!!
