Blog Entry 47 of 76 Awake Thou That Sleepest, Arise From Your Slumber
I am a seeker of truths. I am a soul who has been "awakened" and now an awakener of other souls. Two years ago, something happened to me that I can only explain as a kind of "awakening" from a haze that was my everyday life. The embers of "who I was was" that stirred deep within me were set aflame when I went to see a movie. I wasn't expecting this experience, which is why in part I think it happened. I left the theatre crying and with the most throbbing headache I've ever had, but not the average kind of headache crying gives you. This was the kind of headache characters in movies have after waking up from a coma. The world seemed new to me and it was as if I was remembering my life and who I was for the very first time. Since then, my life has changed in so many ways. And now it has led me here, to this new forum of shared thoughts and ideas. Like the first time I posted my "awakening" experience on a public website, I am again feeling this fear of "Is this really the right place for me to post this?" But like two years ago, I'm willing to take this risk again because I know how important it is to share my experience with as many people as I can, with the hope that others who have had a similar experience, or at least the desire to understand more about what this is about might have the courage to come together and find one another through this blog. It is my hope and belief that I will read the stories of others who are also "seekers" here. Welcome.

Gifts Kids REALLY Love Are Not What They Ask For!
Contributed by: Dianne Perea   on 11/22/2007

Before you head out to the malls or discount stores to buy hundreds of dollars of Christmas gifts for kids, I have a few "insider tips" to share with you first. These are some ideas for Christmas presents that don't involve sugar, won't set you back hundreds of bucks, do not have the potential to ruin something in your home (like your carpet or sanity), and, most importantly, I can almost guarantee KIDS WILL LOVE AND PLAY WITH. For the past year, I have been watching my kids (ages 6 and 10) diligently with what they truly play with around the home, and here's what I've come up with:

A plain, brown box of any size, but a bigger one is good for more imaginative play. These can be bought at any of the businesses that rent storage units.

A tape measure, of their very own! You'll be so relieved to have yours back, too.

Boxes and boxes of band-aides to be used as they wish (within reason, of course).

Rolls of scotch tape, again to be used as they wish and within reason.

Interesting pieces of wood (like the rounded-shaped ones, not too long, though) that you can buy and any home improvement shop.

A set of REAL keys. Naturally, they don't need to be cut, but buy more than a few so they are nice and dangly sounding. A nice keychain to go with it would be a good touch to this.

Reams of paper or drawing tablets and an accompanying accordion-style briefcase to keep all their masterpieces or stories in.

A fresh set of crayons and/or markers. These will come in handy for the box, too.

A tote bag. Not a purse, not a backpack, not a dufflebag. A canvass-like bag that you can find at any of the super-marts that the kids can carry their toys from one room to another very easily.

A flashlight. Again, you'll be glad to have yours back!

And finally, a laminating machine. This will not go over well at first, but once they realize how they can "immortalize" and preserve their art, they will fall in LOVE with it.

I know it is such a cliché, but you know how many times we say, "They play more with the box than the gift it came in." These are those kinds of gifts. Maybe they will inspire you, save you some money, or just get your own wheels turning.

I adore the picture of the girls in the box with packing peanuts. I baby sat years ago for a little girl, Brittany, whose parents had filled a refrigerator box with packing peanuts. The "peanut box" had doors and windows cut into it and became the center of hours of play every single day. That box was a castle, a submarine, and hundreds of other wonderful places. Together she and I would decorate the “peanut box” and imagine our evenings away. Thanks for the reminder of a beautiful memory!
