Yes, they sincerely believed that despite the fact we were 14, we would like a shirt with little trucks or dancing bears on it.

So does that mean that you should never give clothing as gifts?

No, clothing can be a wonderful gift - IF you do your homework.

Rule Number 1 - KNOW THY RECIPIENT

* KIDS - Ask the child directly!

- Size

- Favorite colors, styles, and characters

- Specific items, brands, stores or fabrics that the child prefers or doesn't like.

Bottom line - Don't buy clothes for teenagers of either gender without their
input or presence. You are just wasting your time.

* WOMEN

- Careful! Women can be easily offended by a wrong size, whether too small or too large.

- Unless you are absolutely sure about an adult women's fashion likes and dislikes, it's best not to buy clothing like shirts or pants, even if you know the right size.

- To be safe, stick with accessories like scarves, gloves and hats.

* MEN

- While it's generally true that men tend to be less picky, they're more likely to get a gift of clothing and simply throw it into a drawer or in the back of the closet if they don't like it or it's the wrong size.

- For men, follow Rule Number 2 below

Rule Number 2 - CONSIDER A GIFT CARD.

You can't go wrong with a gift card to a store that the recipient likes or might enjoy.
