Hey have you noticed anything strange about your lawn this year. Its a rare occurrence in a place where snow usually doesn't hang around long. Its called "gray snow mold". It shows up when the long lingering snow finally melts and you'll notice a feathery, gray mold laying there on top of matted turf. It looks a little disgusting but don't panic. Its neither a sign of poor lawn keeping and unlike its cousin "pink snow mold" its not fatal. The name is "typhula blight" and will normally disappear when the new spring growth comes on. If you want to help its recovery I would suggest hand raking the lawn to stand up the blades of grass and help get some air to the compacted area. With this condition present you'll want to wait until all the snow has melted to begin your spring fertilizing.
There's one other thing that happens under long standing snow and the evidence lies in small tracks or paths going every which way in the turf. Its caused by a small field mouse called a "vole". But thats a subject for another time! If you have any questions feel free to give me a call at Rick's Garden Center @632-8491and we'll be glad to give you the advice you need.

Good advice Mike. It's nice to still have a few local garden centers where the people know more than just how to ring up a sale. The big stores are nice, but it's the folks like those at Rick's who actually know something and can give sound advice!
