Furry Friends, Inc, is a locally owned pet food delivery company with 1,000 plus clients. We are seeing several changes since the pet food recall in March 2007. New clients call us daily asking, "What's in your food?" We think that's great! An awareness of what we are feeding our pets is of extreme importance.
Pets cannot decide what should be in their bowls. We as their guardians, have that responsibility. We must know how to read labels. So, what do you look for?
The question may be, what should NOT be in our pets' foods.
The first five ingredients are the MOST important in a food. Does the food begin with a filler like, corn, wheat or soy. These are known allergens for dogs. When there is a lot of filler in a food, the pets have to eat six times more to get the same nutrients, as a super-premium food. When the pet eats more, there is more yard clean-up for you!
What should the No. 1 ingredient be? It should be a protein-like, chicken, lamb, fish, something like that. There should not be layers of carbs, and it should be preserved with vitamin E or canola oil. You do not want chemical preservatives or by-products. Make sure there are no mystery ingredients in your pet's food. Watch for things like poultry fat or meat meal. There is nothing specific about either of those terms. What is a poultry? If it was a chicken or a turkey, it would say that in the ingredient label.
The Senate is not only looking at the pet food chain, but also the human food chain. Products sent from China are getting a lot of publicity. So, if there is anything to be learned from the recall, it is we need to be more informed. Stop and read the ingredient label on that bag. If you have any questions, or we can help, visit our Web site at
