Diabetes Awareness
Contributed by: Diabetes Care Center on 12/2/2007

The Diabetes Care Center, established less than a year ago by co-founders Deanne Vialpando and Andrea Houk, has a very important goal: To increase diabetes awareness locally and nationally.

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month and the United Nations proclaimed November 14 as World Diabetes Day. It was celebrated for the first time around the world this year, but will become an annual event.

The Diabetes Care Center participated in the celebration, opening its doors to the public to offer free educational materials, diabetic supplies, door prizes, food, (thanks to the generous donations from companies such as CCS, Lilly, Animas, Accu-Check, LifeScan), one-on-one sessions, and chair massages for anyone who came in. All proceeds for the sessions and massages are being donated to the local Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), whose goal is to find a cure for Type I Diabetes.

Near the end of the day, JDRF partnered with several corporations and local children with diabetes to celebrate World Diabetes Day and honor the lives of local people living with diabetes. At the Antler's Plaze, our mayor, Lionel Rivera, publicly read a proclaimation to the community, verbally joining those around the world who recogned the 14th as World Diabetes Day and helping to raise local awareness of the 246 million people worldwide who live with the disease.

Throughout the rest of November, diabetes patients and their families and friends continued to come to the Diabetes Care Center to gather free educational materials, free meters, and discuss important issues regarding their health.

As the New Year approaches, the Diabetes Care Center will be (and currently is) marketing their new programs which are designed to educate and support those who live with diabetes and those who support them. Three programs are currently available which cover the basics of Type 2 Diabetes, those dependant on insulin, and Gestational Diabetes. Anyone interested in taking the classes can contact the center directly at 473-7808 to register. Each participant may bring another person to the classes at no extra charge!

The Diabetes Care Center is also partnering with Chef's Catalog, a local business selling top quality cooking products, to offer diabetic cooking classes to the public. These heart-healthy, carb-conscious classes will begin January 24th and will be conducted in Chefs' beautiful commercial kitchen. Class size is limited to 8 so please call Chef's Catalog at 272-2600 to pre-register.

As 2007 comes to a close, the Diabetes Care Center's staff feel blessed to have met so many supportive members as their new business continues to grow. They also look forward to a new year of increasing diabetes awareness in our local community, and helping liberate anyone touched by this disease through education and healthy self-management techniques.

Wishes to everyone for a very Merry Christmas and a joyous New Year!
