American Cancer Society 2007 Sword of Hope Recipient - Peggy Thomas

The recipient of this year's Sword of Hope is Peggy Thomas, RN, MSN, AOCN. Ms. Thomas has worked with cancer patients in our community for more than thirty years. As the Breast Nurse Specialist at Memorial Health System Breast Cancer Center, she provides hands-on life-giving support to women afflicted with this terrible disease. She is often the first person they meet once they've been given their cancer diagnosis, and is often the last person that they see as they are navigating their way through their survivorship. She is the warm hug, the soft smile, and the "best friend" they need through their cancer journey.

This year Ms. Thomas adds the Sword of Hope Award to her long list of recognition that includes the 2005 Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation and BMW of North America Honorable Supporter of Breast Cancer Awareness and 2003 El Paso County Medical Society Excellence in Nursing Award.

On a personal note: As a cancer survivor, I meet Peggy after having my cancer surgery. For those of us who have experienced the turmoil that is experienced with a cancer diagnosis and treatment you will understand how your life is totally turned upside down and inside out. Peggy became an anchor to hold on to. When I would go for my post surgery visits, she always had the time to talk. I knew that she had other patients to see and that I was taking up time. Peggy always made me feel as if I was her only patient that day. I agree with the person who nominated her as they stated, "I can think of no other person who has been as engaged and dedicated to working with cancer patients, throughout their career. Peggy has been a solid foundation in the work of the American Cancer Society, supporting them and their mission in the fight against cancer." Peggy has touched my life significantly as I am sure she has done for hundreds of other women during her career.

Congratulations Peggy on this honor which recognizes the tremendous work and personal contributions that you have made in the lives of others and in the continuing fight against cancer.

Ms. Thomas has been with the Memorial Health System in Colorado Springs since 1980.
