Buena Vista Elementary School will be hosting an information night on
Tuesday, May 13, from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. at the school, located at
1620 West Bijou Street.
Buena Vista became the first public Montessori lin El Paso County in 2004 when District 11 approved the proposal submitted by a grass-roots group of Montessori proponents including parents and educators. District 11 administrators had directed the group to Buena Vista as a possible sight for the program in 2003 when principals of west side schools had convened to find solutions for declining enrollment and avoiding possible school closures.
The program began in 2004-05 with one Primary Montessori class of 3 through 6 year olds (Preschool and Kindergarten) and one Lower Elementary Montessori class of 6 - 9 year olds (first, second, and third grades). Since that time it has grown to include three Primary classes, three Lower Elementary classes, and an Upper Elementary class (fourth & fifth grades). In addition to the seven Montessori classrooms, Buena Vista currently has traditional classrooms for Third, Fourth and Fifth graders. Beginning next school year, only traditional Fourth and Fifth grade will be offered as the school continues its transition to a wholly Montessori program.
The Montessori philosophy and methodology of education is based on the work of Maria Montessori, the first female physician in Italy who developed her method of education over 100 years ago. Montessori is typically found in the private school sector, but the Public Montessori movement has gained strength over the last 20 years, with public programs in Denver, Boulder, Jefferson County and Douglas County schools. A key characteristic of Montessori is the multi-age classrooms where each child is supported in progressing at his/her own pace, encouraging children's independence and self-discipline.
Buena Vista is now enrolling 3 & 4 year olds in the tuition-based preschool program for the 2008-09 school year. The information night will provide an opportunity to learn more about the school and tour the classrooms.
