Never too Young to Study Fine Art
Contributed by: sharon wolff on 2/16/2007

It was an exciting morning for Studio 101's six-year-old art students today as they visited the Gunter-Wolff Gallery in Old Colorado City to learn first hand how professional artist, Jean Houghton, creates her wonderful oil paintings. Houghton set up her easel, laid out a variety of oil colors and explained the tools of an artist including the difference between several types of brushes as she demonstrated her technique. Although these wide-eyed young artists may not be ready to work in oil just yet, they will likely practice their skills using acrylic paints for a while under the watchful eye of highly gifted art teacher, Rhonda Conn-Parent. Miss Rhonda, as her students call her, is an accomplished artist and much-loved teacher.

Studio 101 began offering private art classes to the very young in 2005 when Rhonda Conn-Parent moved her school from her home to Old Colorado City. Her mission is to stimulate and develop an interest in art at an early age and provide a hands-on learning experience covering a variety of mediums from pottery to painting. Private art lessons are available for children as young as age three regardless of ability. Many Studio 101 students attend classes during the entire school year and return for more advanced courses.

The Gunter-Wolff Gallery has been host to several Studio 101 events and welcomes the opportunity to share the works of accomplished professional artists with young artists in the making. In May, Gunter-Wolff Gallery will again open its doors to Studio 101's students and exhibit to the public a number of pieces by these "soon to be famous" young artists.

The big day was tiring and some were ready for a short nap but all jumped up to run back to school to create their own masterpieces after the demonstration by Houghton was finished. Rhonda Conn-Parent's classes are open to children age three and up and more information about Studio 101 is available by calling 719-277-9ART or by visiting www.studio101.biz. Gunter-Wolff Gallery is located at 2605 W. Colorado Avenue in Old Colorado City and features 30 professional artists working in a range of styles and mediums including oil and watercolor paintings, blown glass, jewelry, Raku pottery and other fine works of art.
