"Gateway Hat Day" for Cancer Survivor
Contributed by: jane rodgers on 5/4/2008

May 4, was "hat day" at Gateway Presbyterian church, 731 Castle Road. There were fancy hats, cowboy hats, baseball caps, berets, little fur hats, antique ones and even a scarf. The choir wore hats and so did Rev. Victoria Isaacs.

Hat wearing was a compassionate support for one of the members who, having gone through recent chemotherapy, lost all her hair, and to be in public chose to always wear a hat. Norma Zacharakis gave the organizers of the plan her OK.

What a joy at Sunday morning worship to see so many hats on so many people. The children, the men, her friends, and just acquaintances donned a hat to show how glad everyone was to see Norma in her hat, attending church.

Older members remembered when women always wore a hat whenever they left the house. Many a closet had several hats suited for each season, and usually a new one for Easter Sunday. Hats often covered a bad hair day, and sometimes were caught by the wind, ending up swirling down the sidewalk. But this was a special day for wearing a hat as witnessed by the smiles on the faces in pictures taken by photographer Jane Rodgers, regular Hub contributor.

**A note from Jane ** What a beautiful sight , walking into this church, seeing all the men and women with their fancy hats on to honor this wonderful lady. Wouldn't it be great for all the churches in the Springs to have a "Hat day" for Cancer Survivors? Ask your church to pick a Sunday for your congregation's "hat day." What a great thing to do for your loved ones.
Congratulations Gateway Presbyterian Church for being the first .

What a wonderful way to show support for a member. I hope this kind of support spreads.
