My friend Christine Nekl , mom Betty and daughter Kirsten went on this whirlwind trip covering 2,500 miles in 10 days. The trip included a stop to climb up the Bandero volcano crater and down the adjacent ice cave ;a visit to Tombstone Arizonaand Boot Hill ; a day in Bisbee's Copper Queen and Lavender mines; a drive through Salt Basin; a stop at the Quadaloupe Mountains; a trip through the Carlsbad Caverns; and a trip to Roswell, New Mexico, to see the UFO Museum. We of course, couldn"t leave without getting "beemed" up into a space ship and having our picture taken with the "Aliens".
On this very long trip with threegrannies, and a teeny-bopper stuffed into a very small Suzuki car, we finally reached our destination,Tucson, Ariz. We were all so glad to see the hotel and get out of the car. We then checked into the hotel, went up to our room and started to unpack our suitcases when Christine looked out the window and screamed, "Look- a 'roadrunner'. Now you have to understand that I had only seen roadrunners in magazines never running around outside in our hotel parking lot. I quickly grabbed my digital camera and ran down the stairs and started chasing this bird through alleys and more alleys until it finally ran up this wall and stopped right in front of the "Stop" sign and a "One Way" sign. I couldn't believe my eyes. If there was ever a Kodak moment "this was one". This bird just sat there posing for me while I kept shooting, picture after picture.
Upon my two hour return back to the hotel, huffing and puffing from the run with my fine feathered friend, Christine quipped, "Wiley Coyote could never catch the Roadrunner ,but you certainly did."
I may never get to see another roadrunner observing traffic signs; but the memories of my little feathered friend;three grannyies; and one teeny-bopper in a Suzuki, will live in my heart forever.
