The Golden Cycle Mill, the Midland Railway, rip-roaring bars and brothels, Indian stockades, the short-lived Colorado Territorial Capital---Old Colorado City has retained much of its original pioneer spirit as the area now known as the "Westside of Colorado Springs." Founded in August 1859, Old Colorado City experienced more colorful frontier history in its first ten years, and existed long before either Colorado Springs or Cripple Creek.
The Old Colorado City Historical Society (OCCHS) is an organization devoted to preserving that history, including its historic buildings, culture and spirit. Saturday, August 9 will be spent celebrating this historic neighborhood's founding with the annual Founder's Day Celebration.
All activities will take place in Bancroft Park located at West Colorado Avenue and 24th Street. Beginning at 8 a.m., a Farmers' Market and Craft Fair will be open to the public. A variety of entertainment will take place until 3 p.m. The performers include: The Victorian Society of Colorado Springs who will be performing period dances and a gunslinger show by Gunfighters of the Resurrection. Musical entertainment will be provided by the Serendipity Peak Dulcimers and the CountyLine Ramblers. The historic Garvin Cabin will be open and feature artifacts and furniture of the time period and there will be walking tours. The Carnegie Library will have events throughout the day as well
Bring a picnic lunch, a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the music and atmosphere---it's free!
Information about all activities can be obtained at the History Center, 1 S. 24th Street or call 719-636-1225.
