Blog Entry 27 of 31 Dancing with Mr. Bojangles
This is a site where people of the Colorado Springs area - young and old - can share their thoughts on sports teams, sports figures, sports coaches and sports happenings. This blog is designed to help the community draw closer together. The pulse of the community is often related to sports. A high school football game brings people together for a night of celebration. A Little League baseball game brings out the child in all of us. Sports and athletics are a part of almost everybody's life. Please feel free to share your thoughts and experiences.

Check out the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden

I walked into the Colorado Springs Utilities Xeriscape Demonstration Garden Conservation and Environmental Center at 2855 Mesa Road the other day and was blown away by the setup.
The inside and outside galleries featured displays on trees (deciduous, evergreen), shrubs, vines, cacti, flowers and grasses.
June at the front desk was helpful in answering my questions and gave me information on ways to make the most of my yard and garden any time of the year.
Coming from Southern California, I was used to having a lush, green lawn most of the year. It was easy to maintain a wonderful looking lawn due to the mild climate and sunshine.
I quickly discovered in Colorado that maintaining a green healthy lawn is much more difficult than what I was used to. In fact, I lived in Woodland Park when I first moved to this great state and gave up on the idea of a lawn very quickly. Too many rocks and not very fertile soil squashed my hopes.
When I moved down to Colorado Springs in the summer of 2004, I was happy to have the chance to once again have a healthy lawn.
My first summer in the city was spent getting the lawn into shape. I did some xeriscape, planted some trees and trimmed back others. Before long, dead areas turned green and the grass got thicker.
I have aerated and fertilized my lawn many times since then and am proud to say that my yard has gone from the eyesore of the neighborhood to the best looking lawn on the block.
I plan on visiting the Xeriscape Demonstration Garden many times in the future and encourage you to do the same.
