An author's life is never smooth sailing but is filled with ups and downs. A rejection follows on the heels of an acceptance, a good signing after a dismal one, writer's block after days of being "in the zone", or a successful speech after a disaster. Recently, I participated in a group booksigning at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs bookstore, and the six authors sold a total of three books. A few days before that, I had an evening program scheduled at a local library, and no one showed. The librarian and I had a nice chat, though! But then, at last Saturday's Holiday Market put on at Cottonwood Artists' School in conjunction with the Colorado Farm and Art Market, I sold a few copies of my mystery, A REAL BASKET CASE, in the Pikes Peak Writers book room even though hardly anyone came to the event due to the snowstorm.
Also, A REAL BASKET CASE is now in over 300 US library systems (Pikes Peak Library District has 10 copies), and the large-print edition will be released in January. The online Crime and Suspense magazine recently accepted my short story, "The Extra Gift", for their January/February issue that has a celebration theme. And, Colorado Homegrown Tales, a performance group in Denver, selected another of my stories, "Biscuit Connection", to be dramatized by an actor at their holiday program in late December. So, I can't complain about the two unsuccessful events. Here's hoping my next one, a panel discussion at the Aurora Public Library on February 3rd isn't snowed out and that library patrons actually attend!
