Wildlife Rehab Center Plans Expansion
Contributed by: Donna Ralph on 4/10/2008

The year 2007 brought tremendous growth in the demand for EWRC services. The Center also experienced growth in its volunteer and educational outreach programs. Starting in January EWRC was again asked to care for sick and starved water birds from north of Denver. Even with the addition of two new outdoor enclosures and massive expansion of the raptor flight enclosure our space was cramped. Because of the need for indoor care for so many ailing animals the house was full of critters which made effective convalescing a bit difficult, and left little room for us to function in our daily lives. While we are very appreciative of the thoughtfulness of many friends who drop off much needed supplies, many of these donated items such as kennels and small cages are piling up inside and outside the house. The increased demand for services is burdened even more by a noticeable decrease in licensed wildlife rehabilitators in our area and a growing population of concerned individuals wanting to protect wildlife.

As a facility that serves the entire State and given the obvious need that exists, it is time for EWRC to expandits facilities in order to effectively care for our wildlife and to enhance its educational outreach and volunteer programs. EWRC is embarking on an ambitious campaign to construct a new efficient wildlife rehabilitation center complete with Intensive Care Unit, examination/treatment rooms, quarantine rooms, washroom facility, cordoned rehab rooms for specific species, supply storage and a significant goal will be to include an on site area as a Wildlife Community Learning Center. We are truly excited about the opportunity of bringing community education outreach programs on site as there is a tremendous need for this.

We believe that the animals brought to us deserve the best care possible; building the new facility will enable us to provide them with a quiet, peaceful, properly-equipped facility where they can heal from their injuries and be nurtured for release. Equally important, the facility will provide an efficient environment for EWRC volunteers, staff and veterinarians to care for the ailing wildlife. EWRC is a State and federally licensed wildlife rehab facility operating as a home-based non-profit organization. Plans are currently in the development stage as we realize the complexity of the project and address the many needs (and wishes) to ensure that an appropriate facility will be built and it will remain functional for years to come.

As friends, family and supporters of the EWRC we are counting on you to help us bring our dreams to reality. Please inquire for more information about the project and to learn how you can help us build the new EWRC. Your phone calls or e-mails with ideas for making the project a success are welcomed!!
