A project co-sponsored by the Friends of the Manitou Springs Library and the Manitou Springs Arts Council has produced a 2009 official Manitou Springs full-color calendar. The calendar showcases art and photography focusing on scenes and attractions of Manitou Springs.
"Our call for submissions yielded over 200 entries of original art and photography," said Julia Wright, board member of the Manitou Springs Arts Council. "We had to make some difficult choices." Several amateur and professional photographers and artists from Manitou and the region came forth to participate in the project. "This collaboration was a natural fit for the Friends of the Library and the Manitou Springs Arts Council," said Diane Fabeck, Friends board member. "And the response from the photographers and artists was very encouraging."
The calendar can be owned for a suggested $12 donation to the Library Restoration Fund and can be found at Black Cat Bookstore, the Commonwheel Artists Co-op and the Library. It will also be available at Bratz & Fine Art and Author Fest of the Rockies, two signature fundraisers of the Friends of the Library. Manitou's library is one of the few remaining Carnegies being used for its original purpose. The Friends have set a goal to restore and expand the library, which is in need of technological updates and more space to accommodate the growth of Manitou.
Restoration of the Manitou Springs Carnegie Library is an important element in the historic preservation movement in Manitou. Founded in the 1880s as a health resort, Manitou Springs is a thriving town where art, history and nature come together in a unique and diverse mix. The Manitou Springs Arts Council exists to preserve, promote and pursue collaboration between the Arts and the Community. The Friends of the Manitou Springs Public Library is a 501(c)3 that exists to promote and support the Manitou Springs Public Library as a full service library by supplementing the City's normal processes.
