Shooting at New Life Church
Contributed by: Travis Duncan on 12/10/2007

My parents normally attend New Life Church, but they didn't make it today. I didn't know that until after hearing about the shooting. I called them with concern as soon as I heard. Many others probably had a similar experience.

It all seems so senseless. And it is. Two people dragged themselves out of their warm beds on a Sunday morning, braved cold weather and slick roads, worshipped with their church, and were randomly gunned down in the parking lot afterward.

If all the statistics say that violent crime is down, then why does society increasingly feel like it's more dangerous?

Consider this: There are studies that show (and my own experience certainly mirrors this) that each successive generation in America is given less space to roam as a child. My father roamed the city. I roamed my neighborhood. My daughter will be lucky to play in the yard by herself. Is it just paranoia? If so, then why do my fears seem justified by looking up the number of sexual predators who live in my neighborhood?

It's late. My thoughts are disjointed. Tomorrow the police will hold a press conference and perhaps we'll have more answers. Until then, my thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. I hope you get some rest tonight.

Let me expand a bit. One statement made by member Bob Spaeth that he saw the incident of as proof of the 'falling moral climate of the nation. Then "You can't expect to take God out of the schools, God out of politics, God out of our businesses and lives and not have something like this happen." The point is valid but much broader, to me, about the influence, or lack of it from religous teachings in this society. You don't have to be a practicing Christian, or a Jew, or a Muslim, or Hindu to know that basic MORAL VALUES - what is 'right' or 'wrong' stem more from enduring religious teachings than from any cutsey modern faddish reliance on 'science' or 'situational ethics' or 'laws' (why do laws say murder is illegal?) The abandonment of more and more people from ANY beliefs except themselves, is just as much a cause of crime today as any more superficial reason, like bad toilet training as a babe.

There are no simple answers, but I can tell you from my 80 years life experience, several factors are obvious to me. First, ever since the '60s' when the 'Me' generation and the 'Turn on, tune in, drop out' culture rose, SELF CONTROL, and the 'taking of responsibility ' has dimished. Shooting others? Who cares? Secondly there is a huge factor in Media itself, that makes EVERY violent acts top news. You followed I am sure the suicide note by last week's Mall killer whose bottom line was "I'll be Famous!"
