Blog

Life Through My Eyes
Well, as an eighteen year old, i have a wide range of interests and things to talk about. I'm sure my blog will reflect this as i find myself able to express my self far better in the written word than in the spoken (although i am an incredibly outspoken individual). I think that while my life is relatively normal, I'll be able to explore it and put my own spin on it. Maybe no one will read this, but that will be ok because I'm not writing this for the readers but rather for the joy of writing!

Finding my voice...harder than you might think.

Dry, empty, meaningless. Those were the words which described my writing, (might still describe my writing actually, however i think its getting better) before it came to my attention that writing was more than a way to get a passing grade in my English classes. At some point along the way i realized that writing was a form of communication and as such should be as highly personalized as the words that are constantly flowing out of my mouth, (which i must say, are quite witty,ha). Then and only then did i start to put my actual thoughts, not the run off of thoughts which i had carefully screened for school, on to paper. (As an aside, I am currently listening to an oral communication class give their "getting to know me" speeches, and am realizing that having gone to school with these kids since kindergarten, i already know everything about them which they are willing to share with the class.)
So, back to my voice, as this is my first blog i feel i should say something about why it is the way it is, and where it has come from. It tends to be cynical, and blunt, and as i often speak before i think, i also write without much discretion, I guess i figure that if i feel it is important enough for me to be writing about, it is important enough for me to be honest about.
I grew up in a single parent home, not all that uncommon in today's "flourishing" American society, (there's the cynicism i was talking about) in which my mom worked multiple jobs to make ends meet. My older sister took care of me and my little brothers, and therefore didn't have a lot of "me" time. She moved out when she was young due to a series of rather serious fights with my mom, a pattern i would follow as soon as i turned 18. The irony of all ironies is that i grew up in Manitou Springs. Those of u who have lived or visited here understand. For those of you that haven't, let me explain. In our little corner of the very conservative, home of focus on the family world, Manitou Springs is synonymous with liberals, hippies, potheads, and best of all, meth labs. (not that i find meth production or use at all comical, but if u realized how many meth labs we have here, u would probably laugh as well). Now in all reality, Manitou is a great town, i couldn't think of a better place to grow up actually (yes, i know everyone says that about their hometowns, just like everyone says their babies are the cutest), and i have no doubt whatsoever that its incredibly open and accepting attitude has fostered my very similar outlook on life.
WOW, i have really rambled for a while, that is something i need to work on, directing my focus that is.
Well, thanks to a very select group of English teachers and a few others, i write what i write how i write it. I'll probably post another blog someday, but for now, peace, love, and all that good stuff.
