Shortly before deadline for this week's issue, a press release came screeching into this community journalist's inbox with the subject line reading, "Long Lost Democrat Found in Manitou Springs." It announced that a Mr. Donkey Hotay would be presented to the credential committee at the 2008 State Democratic Convention at the World Arena on Saturday as an alternate representing the Colorado Springs west side and Manitou Springs. Apparently he's come down from the hills because other donkeys have been showing up at precinct caucuses.
"Some people think donkeys are stubborn," said Manitou Springs councilwoman Elizabeth Feder, "but they're not. They're just loyal." That's why Feder said Mr. Hotay, a representative of a highly accomplished, highly intelligent donkey society in El PasoCounty, would be talking with attendees to ensure he supports the right candidate: Obama or Clinton. "It's a decision to be made with great care and thought, because once he makes his decision, he won't be changing," Feder said.
As a Democrat, I can't help but get a kick out of this clever little idea, which Feder said was dreamed up by Manitou Springs Economic Development Director Kitty Clemens. Though I must admit, I'm concerned about the whole "Don Quixote" allusion. Are we all just delusional Democrats with high-falutin ideas of chivalry? And where/how does our Dulcinea play into all of this? Will that be Clinton or Obama?
Do you have an opinion on the upcoming election, Saturday's convention, or the venerable Donkey Hotay?
