Fountain Branch Hosts AAFCU Art Contest
Contributed by: David Rasmussen on 4/11/2007

Now through the end of April, come enjoy student art from Fountain/Ft. Carson School District #8. Students from every grade and school have surpassed themselves in an ongoing exhibit at the Fountain Branch Library of the Pikes Peak Library District, located at 230 S. Main St., in downtown Fountain.

This is a judged art show with scholarship prizes for the winning students. The show is part of the Air Academy Federal Credit Union (AAFCU) Art Scholarship Contest which was created in 1994. AAFCU selected the arts arena to focus its outreach programs on as a result of budgetary constraints placed on member school district art programs. The primary goals of the contest are to: 1) Support art education in member school districts, 2) Promote the value of higher education, and 3) Encourage creativity and diversity. More importantly, the Arts Scholarship Program helps build self esteem in students and rewards their perseverance as artists. The Art Scholarship Contest takes place every spring for students in grades K - 12 in our member school districts. Since its inception, AAFCU has awarded nearly $350,000 in savings bonds and cash awards, with individual scholarship awards ranging from $25 - $600.

AAFCU works directly with art teachers in each school district to coordinate the event. Teachers select the entries. The art that is chosen must be original in idea and technique and all pieces are exhibited in a show for judges (local artists, art instructors, and credit union employees). Art is displayed in a public venue for viewing and awards are presented at a public event honoring the winners.

Awards are given based on grade or group of grades, with 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. Additionally, winning pieces can be awarded additional scholarship dollars by achieving Best of Show - Elementary ($50), Middle School ($75) and High School ($100).

Don't miss this excellent opportunity to view some of the finest artistic talent in District #8 on display at the Fountain Branch Library. The show will continue through the end of April.
