Shooting at New Life Church
Contributed by: Travis Duncan on 12/10/2007

My parents normally attend New Life Church, but they didn't make it today. I didn't know that until after hearing about the shooting. I called them with concern as soon as I heard. Many others probably had a similar experience.

It all seems so senseless. And it is. Two people dragged themselves out of their warm beds on a Sunday morning, braved cold weather and slick roads, worshipped with their church, and were randomly gunned down in the parking lot afterward.

If all the statistics say that violent crime is down, then why does society increasingly feel like it's more dangerous?

Consider this: There are studies that show (and my own experience certainly mirrors this) that each successive generation in America is given less space to roam as a child. My father roamed the city. I roamed my neighborhood. My daughter will be lucky to play in the yard by herself. Is it just paranoia? If so, then why do my fears seem justified by looking up the number of sexual predators who live in my neighborhood?

It's late. My thoughts are disjointed. Tomorrow the police will hold a press conference and perhaps we'll have more answers. Until then, my thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. I hope you get some rest tonight.

Used to be, when people were angry they would write a letter to the editor of the newspaper. Now they bring a gun to a school or a church. I think we should teach angry people how to write letters.

I'm glad your folks are safe. Interestingly enough, I have run into a lot of people who had friends or relatives, who, for some reason, decided not to go to New Life that morning. As for the safety issue and kids, maybe weird things happened as frequently as they do now when I was a kid, but it seems now that when someone does something bad in a small town thousands of miles away, it gets on the news, regardless of the news value in your city. And if it is a slow day on CNN, we find out about a car hitting a jaywalker in Bombay, which we probably didn't know about then. What saddens me, though, is this follow-up story of Jeanne Assam, having to air her dirty laundry (which had nothing to do with the incident) nor did any of the print reports that I saw address what Larry Bourbannis did, which was face down, unarmed, the gunman and may have given Assam time to get there (according to the TV interview, there was a male security guard, who more or less froze).

I don't know if it's that America has become any more dangerous as bad things happened when I was kid in the 60's and 70's too. There were shootings, serial killers, and even predators back then. We're more aware now thanks to the media and perhaps that is why we try to be more vigilant in our defenses. When something like this occurs people tend to hold their children more closely, reach out to strangers with a kind hand a bit more often, and even make amends for past errors all because it serves as a reminder to all how precious and how fragile life is. Perhaps if we kept this in mind a little more often the world would become a bit more peaceful, a bit more kinder, and a lot safer for all.
