C-SAP TESTING...HARMFUL TO CHILDREN'S HEALTH?
Contributed by: Penny Cimino   on 4/4/2007

There are a lot of things I am not a big fan of. Public schools, C-SAP, people that think I want to see their underwear ... you know, things like that. Let's talk about the first two and skip the last one, for today anyway.

The public school system is run by the government and the government has ruined it by giving schools "extra" money if they jump through hoops! It's hard to find a teacher or school that is only concerned with educating my child and providing a well-rounded education. Now they must only read certain books to get credit for reading. It's no longer about reading for fun! Well, I could go on about my opinion on public schools and it's only my opinion. Except now what used to be just my opinion has turned into a more serious situation.

I had the opinion that kids should get to go to the bathroom when they needed to! Yes, even during school! It seemed like common sense. During C-SAP testing my son needed to .... well as he puts it ..."go #2." The teacher already informed them that they were not allowed to use the restroom. I raised my kids to always obey their teacher, a teacher is a person of authority. This is something I'm regretting. Since she already informed them of this "rule" he didn't bother to ask. He ended up soiling his pants. That's not all, after three weeks of suffering, going to the doctor twice, and finally doing x-rays, it seems one of his intestines is completely full of poo! Hmmm .... I wonder why! To ask a child to hold his bodily fluids at all is idiotic! Especially when there is a bathroom down the hall.

He has now missed 5 days of school and of course during more CSAP testing which he'll have to make up when he returns, he suffered 3 weeks, I now have medical bills .... x-rays aren't cheap and I have terrible insurance. All of this because he wasn't allowed to relieve himself. This needs to change. This is not the first time, just the most serious.

Teachers, if a kid needs to use the restroom, LET HIM GO! Don't tell them that they have to hold it because they'll miss out on too much "instruction." It takesfive minutes! Otherwise, one of these days there will be a lawsuit. Sadly, this might be the only way teachers will stop this abuse. Don't think I'm not considering it.

My son is now instructed to use the restroom whenever he needs to, even if it means walking out of the classroom against the teacher's wishes. These instructions concern him a great deal. The fear of a "referral" keeps coming up in the conversation. I am now trying to convince him that what we've been through the last three weeks is much worse than any "referral" a teacher can hand him. I now have to unteach what I have taught his whole life. This leaves us both very confused and upset.

This sound like a bad teacher problem, not a CSAP problem.

That is awfully strange. I'm at the Highschool and we finished our testing a while ago and we were allowed to leave to use the restroom if it was an 'emergency'. Only one of us ould go at a time though and we had to leave our test book, and I don't remember if we had to be escorted or not. When my sister was in the third grade, somthing similair happened to her, except that ot wasn't during testing. I don't know what grade your son was in, but I get the impression that teachers K-6 are a little too power hungry, and they get some kind of kick from controlling bathroom priviledges. It's not my place to make assumptions though. Great article, and I'm very sorry about your son.

I can relate to this blog in the fact that I still take CSAP and although my school will let one student go to the bathroom at a time there can be a problem that accurs if more than one student needs to go. CSAP in my oppinion is just a way for schools to have more competition besides through sports or other such activities.
